Chuy's Choice

Introducing Maria J. Lemus, aka Chuy - North Creek's Propagation Purveyor Extraordinaire! A longtime employee here at the Creek (15 years this February), Chuy is always looking for liners that stand out, and here is her selection for spring 2014!

Schizachyrium scoparium 'Standing Ovation' PPAF
(little bluestem)

At the time of year when all else seems to be on the down turn of the gardening season, we gardeners can undoubtedly rely on the lasting presence of Schizachyrium scoparium 'Standing Ovation' - the little bluestem that keeps us on our feet. This fine-tuned ornamental grass packs a powerful punch in summer, autumn and winter landscapes alike. If you're looking for color and upright habit...look no further than your window as she still stands tall amongst the dull greys and snowy whites of winter. From start to finish this standout stands alone. Topping out between 3-4 feet, 'Standing Ovation' is a no flop, no fuss warm season grass. Thick stems in summer hues ranging between blues, greens and purples transition into a majestic array of vivid purples, vibrant reds and autumnal oranges. Seed heads offer the added bonus of texture and harmony in the waning horizon. A North Creek introduction well worth the accolades, 'Standing Ovation' has earned its applause!

Height: 3−4 feet  |  Spread: 12 inches  |  USDA Zones: 3−8
